We are no longer on Denton Avenue, near the Sunset Ridge Disc Golf Course. We were there for a long time, but have outgrown that location. If you haven’t seen the new store yet, you are missing out. Not only does it have tens of thousands of discs, and every accessory you could imagine, but it also features giant murals of jellyfish with basket chains for tentacles, and a scene of baby Yoda playing disc golf with Mando. Because of the mandos in disc golf. Get it?

Who Is Michael Barnett?

Michael Barnett is the owner and operator of SunKing Discs. If you’ve played a tournament in Florida, then you’ve probably heard of him. Barnett founded SunKing in 2001 with the dream of becoming the premier disc golf retailer in the industry. Twenty plus years later and Barnett is a legendary tournament director with one of the most well-known brands in disc golf; operating in the Tampa Bay Area, which has been home to some of the sports’ greatest players ever, such as Ken “The Champ” Climo.

If you’ve watched coverage on JomezPro, or listened to Terry Miller’s podcast, or if you’re a touring professional, you’ve seen and heard about Mike Barnett and his disc golf brand: Sun King.

Traveling Vendor

Throw Down The Mountain

“I love this property. I will come to this tournament every chance I get.” – Paul McBeth, 6x World Champion, 4x Thrown Down the Mountain Champion.

Throw Down the Mountain (TDTM) is a SunKing disc golf tournament, with Michael Barnett as the course designer and tournament director. People travel from all over the world to come and play this event every year. At the time of writing this article, TDTM is in its 11th year.

Each year SunKing and their team of dedicated staff, volunteers, and disc golf enthusiasts, prepare the property known as The Gran Canyon DGC for this tournament. Located in Brooksville, Florida, this course breaks the standard for Florida disc golf. The Gran Canyon is built on an old limestone quarry that was long-ago converted to a pasture for livestock. The course features massive cliffs, drop offs, rolling hills, 12-feet tall tropical grasses, palm trees, and sun-dappled fairways covered in green grass and canopied by ancient oaks and pines.

Have you ever thrown off a cliff before? Have you ever played disc golf on a mountain in Florida? Paul McBeth travels to this tournament as often as he can. Need we say more?
