As you develop your disc golf skill you will probably start to see the need and the want for new, more, and better disc golf gear. At Sun King Discs, our goal is to become your go-to shop for all things disc golf. In this article we’re going to provide some basic tips for how to level up your gear.
Tip #1 – Try different disc plastics
Discs are the central piece of equipment that the game of disc golf relies on. As you become more familiar with the disc molds that you like to throw, make sure you’re trying that same mold in a variety of different plastics. The plastic types are one of the most important factors in determining (a) how a disc can fly, and (b) how the flight characteristics will change over time as the disc is used.
Example: the Innova Destroyer
You can get this classic and super-popular mold in a ton of different plastics, all variants available from our disc golf disc selection. Here are just a few examples, and how the plastic choice will change the flight characteristics of your disc, right out of the box.
- DX Destroyer (base plastic)
- This is Innova’s “base plastic”. The base plastic discs are much flippier than their premium counterparts when thrown with the same power. Use this plastic to throw rollers, towering sky-anhyzers, or huge downhill full-flight s-turns.
- Star Destroyer (premium plastic)
- This is the most popular plastic for this mold. Out of the box it’s overstable and then beats in reliably to a disc that’s capable of the hyzer-flip shot shape, and other turning shapes.
- Champion Destroyer (premium plastic)
- This is an overstable plastic for this disc. It will take a lot longer to beat in, and is typically used when you do not want the disc to flip/turn over much or at all.
- Halo Star Destroyer (premium plastic)
- This is a newer plastic, but has quickly become a popular one. This plastic provides the overstability of the champion plastic, but allows the disc to beat in faster than champion (but not as fast as regular star). Beat-in Star Destroyers have become a staple for Innova throwers on the Pro Tour, such as Calvin Heimburg, Team Sun King’s Garret Gurthie, Jennifer Allen, and many others.
By experimenting with different plastic types you may discover that you can throw some shots better with different plastics, and you may even unlock new shots that you didn’t think a particular mold was capable of for you.
The basic rule: each manufacturer has a base plastic, and that’s typically the flippiest plastic available and the least durable (beats in the fastest). And then each manufacturer typically has multiple premium plastics, all of which have different characters, but in general premium is less flippy and more durable (i.e. beats in slower).

This is a perfect example of utilizing Sun King’s expertise and using disc golf gear to level up your game.
Tip #2 – Use a Disc Golf Rangefinder
Our sport now has major manufacturers producing disc golf gear specifically for us. Golfers have long relied on the rangefinder to measure distance, select golf clubs, and plan shots. Now disc golfers have access to rangefinders developed specifically for them.
If you’ve never used one, here’s how they work: it’s a handheld optical device, similar to binoculars in that you hold it up to your eye and then visually find the target in the viewport. The viewport will have markings in the middle (a reticle) and the device will have a button on it. Find the thing you want to measure, put the reticle on it, click the button, and you will see real-time data (measurements) on the screen. It’s great.
These tell you exactly how far away something is in feet or meters. You can measure the distance to the target, obstacle, or any reference point that would help you plan your shot. Rangefinders have changed the game in a major and positive way for players.

If your goal is to level up your game, the rangefinder is an essential piece of disc golf gear for that purpose. Pick yours from the SunKing Discs collection today!
Tip #3 – Get a practice basket
At this stage, if you’re looking for disc golf equipment to help you level up your game, we’re going to hope you already have at least one practice basket. But just in case you don’t: having regular and private access to a practice basket is critical to reaching your maximum potential as a player.
You can get really good by just showing up to courses and playing, and practicing in the field. But to truly be good at this game you need to practice putting regularly. And practice putting doesn’t happen on the disc golf course, it happens with a private practice basket, you, your putters, and your brain. So, if you are going to takeaway anything from this read today, browse our disc golf equipment and buy a practice basket.
Sun King offers a variety of different disc golf targets (players often just call them baskets). Some are designed to fold up and be taken with you to a field, while others are designed to be stationary for longer periods of time (more permanent, you could say).
Sun King can also help you acquire permanent targets. If you need that, please call the shop at 727-388-3473 or use our form here: https://www.sunkingdiscs.com/contact-us/
